Basmati rice has a very distinct smell that many describe as being similar to popcorn when it’s cooked. In fact, the word “basmati” in Hindi means “full of aroma” or “fragrant.” In some places, it’s called the “queen of perfumed rice.” Basmati rice is native to India and Pakistan, with India being responsible for 2/3 of the global supply. While its true origins aren’t clear, archaeologists have discovered a type of long-grain rice near Udaipur, India dating back to between 2000 and 1600 BC that they believe to be an ancestor of the basmati rice we enjoy today.
About the brand
Taj is an Australian owned family brand created by entrepreneur & visionary, Late Mr. Sid Varma, during the mid-1970’s. Mr. Varma along with his wife, migrated to Australia. His years of experience in International trade and his love for basmati, drove Mr. Varma to introduce Australia’s first branded basmati rice – ‘Taj’ & ‘White Tiger’. Taj has since grown to become one of the leading basmati brands amongst the extremely discerning rice eating communities in Australia. Extremely high quality, customer satisfaction and brand loyalty have been the main guiding principles of the brands growth. Mr. Varma retired in July 2008, passing on the reins to his grandsons – Gautam and Arjun Varma. Taj brand is 100% owned, controlled & marketed by Taj Foods Australia. Although primarily known for its rice, they have steadily diversified their product line with ethnic frozen vegetables, frozen herbs, Indian Snacks & Sweets, Organic Food Range, fresh yoghurt and fresh paneer (Indian style cottage cheese) and more. In August 2017, Taj Foods strengthened its brand alliances with an exciting new partnership with Universal Studios to explore the confectionery and beverages world as licensees to these Hollywood heavy hitters. More recently, Taj Foods also entered into a partnership with Nestrade,a Nestle Group Company. Taj Foods is now a Nestrade approved partner for distribution of Nestle products to Supermarket trade (within International Foods Category) and Ethnic trade across various channels. These ventures open completely new territories for the Australian owned household basmati rice brand, established in Australia over 30 years ago.
